A tribute to James

Ever since I heard the sad news yesterday that The Godfather of Soul, James Brown passed away, I've been working on this sketch.

Here's to you James, hope ya dig it!

Barack revisited

Here's a little more refined version of the same one...

Ok, so I haven't posted in awhile... oh, legion of fans, please except my humble apology... he he... Anyway, here's a quick sketch of Barack Obama that I did today just for the heck. I mean, this guy seems to be creatin' a stir, so I thought I'd do a drawing of him... besides... those teeth! Couldn't resist...

btw, I sure have been derelict in posting on this blog when I promised that I would try to keep it up. so, my new year's resolution is going to be to post more... ha! let's see how well that works out...

Kissin' Cowboy

Here's another caricature that I did over at The Drawing Board thread. Funny pose. Reminded me of those ads for The Art Instruction School. "Draw the Pirate", "Draw the Cowboy", "Draw the whatever" or maybe it was just "Draw Me" with a picture of a pirate or cowboy... or maybe there never was a cowboy, I don't know, but anyway, that's what I thought of...

Ok, so I guess I have a strange concept of what constitutes a "week". Looks like I never finished up last week's "Jazz Sketch Week"... Oh well, these things happen when life gets in the way of drawing... anyway, here's a continuation of jazz week with this recent rendition of Miles Davis.

Doing a drawing of John Coltrane is fun, but listening to Giant Steps for the first time in years is heaven.

Jazz Sketch Week

I came across a bunch of old drawings that I did a long time ago that were jazz related, so I decided to devote this week to drawings of the jazz world. I'll post a different one every day this week. Some old and some new.

This one is a blast from the past... did this the year before I got my Mac. So, contrary to popular belief I can draw without the 'puter/wacom tablet...

Here's Thelonius Monk (click on the picture for a larger version):

on edit: of course, "can draw" and "can draw well" are two different things...

Mr. Slim

Caricatures are fun to do, but I'm gonna try posting up more of a variety of sketches soon...

this is one of vtslim.

Also, from the Trying-to-Improve-My-Little-Blog Department: I've fixed things so now when you click on the images you'll get a larger version to better examine the glorious/hideous details.

An oldie, but goodie...

Since I'm not always going to be able to post new stuff, from time to time I'll post older stuff that I've done.

Also, I'm attempting using alternative technology on this blog as well, so I thought I'd try my hand at a YouTube video. Hope it works.

This is an animation of a self caricature that I did ages ago. It was for a study on expressions. Check it out let me know what you think.

I got meself a sketchblog. Wicked!

Ok, so, here's my blog, folks. I'm gonna try to post stuff up here on a regular basis now that I am starting to finally get back into actually drawing stuff after 20 of years slaving away doing interface design. That's still my day job, but the stuff I'll post here is my after hours passion. (Well, that and writing/playing music, but creating a myspace page for that is a bit farther down on my to-do list)

I spend a lot of time on The Drawing Board. In particular, the hot hot hot Caricaturist's Caricature thread. It's where pro and amateur alike post pictures of themselves and everybody draws each other. We have a blast, so you should check it out.

Anyway, here's a quick sampling of a couple of the caricatures that I did...

This is the very first one that I posted up there last year:

This one was done a couple of months ago:

this is the most recent one I posted last week:
